Abstract:  Extended metaphor is a variant of conceptual metaphor. We explore its functioning as a cohesion and coherence device in some of the novels by J. London and their translations into Russian. The extended metaphor give coherence to the metaphorical structure of the novels on the cognitive level, and manifests itself in a system of lexical metaphors (micrometaphors). The text of translation is viewed mainly as the result of interpretation by the translator, influenced by the cognitive structures of his mother tongue. The study has shown that translation affects extended metaphor on the level of its textual manifestations, leaving the cognitive structure essentially intact.

Keywords:  extended metaphor, conceptual metaphor, metaphorical model, translation
