Abstract: The paper deals with independent, discovery-provoking corpus-based and data- driven approaches in language learning and teaching, cognitive studies and corpora research serving as theoretical basis for them. We discuss corpus-based methods for the study of multifaceted lexical units such as collocation, colligation, lexical bundles and chunks, as well as linguistic hedging, manifesting itself at various levels of linguistic analysis. The research has been done on the material of the English language.
