EVALUATIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF A PERSON BASED ON COLOUR

EVALUATIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF A PERSON BASED ON COLOUR

Author:  M. Ye. Prokhorova

Abstract
The paper considers the two essential types of conceptualization of the world – description and evaluation – and ways of linguistic representation of descriptive and evaluative concepts. It is often difficult to distinguish between descriptive and evaluative linguistic units as most of them combine both meanings or represent different meanings in various contexts. This idea is exemplified by colour similes used to cha-racterize a person. Their multifunctional character shows that evaluative characterization of a person can be based on objectively perceived features of human appearance.

Keywords:  description and evaluation, evaluative conceptualization, colour simile, human appearance and state, colour representant, additional characteristic
