FOREGROUNDING AND FIGURE-GROUND DIFFERENTIATION IN THE LIGHT OF COGNITIVE STYLISTIC APPROACH TO TEXT ANALYSIS

Abstract:  The article focuses on the theoretical issues of cognitive stylistic analysis of foregrounding in its close relationship with the figure-ground differentiation. The correlation between foregrounding and figure-ground differentiation is determined by the commonality of cognitive mechanisms used for information organisation, specificity of attention allocation in textual data processing and stylistic properties which provide the salience of this or that unit in the textual continuum.
