EVENTS IN RUSSIAN ORAL NARRATIVES: A STUDY OF GESTURES IN SPEECH

Author:  O. K. Iriskhanova

Abstract:  The paper presents the results of an empirical study of Russian oral narratives with the focus on the multimodal construal of events in this type of discourse. The analysis of the gestures used with the verbs in the past tense has shown significant differences between Russian, French and German in terms of the correlation between bounded and nonbounded events, perfective and imperfective verb forms and bounded and unbounded gestures. The author enterprets the findings demonstrating that Russian co-speech gesturing is determined by a number of general and specific factors and parameters - grammatical, lexico-semantic and pragmatic.

Keywords:  event, gesture, aspect, (un)boundedness
