THE SEMANTIC ROLES OF SUBJECT AND OBJECT, BENEFACTIVE-PRIVATIVE RELATIONS BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS OF SITUATION IN POSSESSIVE CONSTRUCTIONS

Author:  E.G. Permiakova

Abstract:  This article describes the actualization of conceptual characteristics of “benefaction” and “privation” of possessive verbs in the English and Russian languages. Benefactive, privative and benefactive-privative verbs characterize a situation in which the subject-beneficiary profits from ac-tions of an alien person and acquires a benefit for himself or transfers it to another participant of the situation. The main point thus reflected consists in indicating of action committed in favor of the participant which in terms of structure and semantics is either the beneficiary or benefactive. Some-times benefactive situation implies a possessive situation of alienation in which one of the partici-pants is the subject-privationary or privative. In this case, the conceptual characteristic “privation” is expressed on several levels: lexical and syntactic. At the lexical level the conceptual characteristic “privation” lies in the semantics of alienation verbs, on the syntactic level, the role of the participant is determined contextually depending on a conceptual characteristic of awareness / lack of awareness.

Keywords:  semantic roles of subject and object, benefactive and privative relations between participants of situations with possessive constructions.
