Abstract:  The paper is an attempt to reveal the mechanisms of semantic interaction of the complex units constituents. The basic premise of the research is that words do not represent neatly packaged bundles of meaning (the dictionary view), but serve as „points of access‟ to vast repositories of knowledge relating to a particular concept or conceptual domain structure [Evans 2006]. This expanse of knowledge is the basis of sets of latent semantic features which await their turn to be realized in communication. The language data, firstly, nominal constructions of the N+N type in Present-Day English, clearly demonstrate the active participation in their compositional meanings of the latent semantic features, which, embracing all types of world knowledge, get profiled under the influence of contextual environment. The research is focused on the types of latent features which can be of different character: FUNCTIONAL with their subvarieties, LOCATIVE, CONSTITUTIVE, QUANTITATIVE and PERCEPTUAL. The role of each type of latent features for this construction varies significantly: functional and locative being most fundamental with perceptual latent features least relevant.

Keywords:  conceptual structure, compositional meaning, latent semantic feature.
