COLLOCATION PATTERNS OF THE NOUNS PRAZDNIK AND FESTIVAL IN A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: 

The present paper focuses upon semantic and functional properties of nominal collocations with substantives prazdnik and festival. Drawing on the data of Russian National Corpus and Historical Corpus of American English this research traces minute semantic changes that affected the meaning of the key noun in the last three centuries and resulted in new collocation schemes. It is argued that cognitive shifts in the structure of nominal constructions frequently originate from intrinsic changes in the pragmatics of the key word, and more specifically, from gradual weakening of axiological (value-laden) elements of its meaning.
