GRAMMAR: EVOLUTION OF THE NOTION

Abstract:  The paper addresses the issues of the evolution of grammar and some aspects of its typology. It is stressed that in European linguistics since the Antiquity until the end of the XIX century grammar was regarded as “the art of speaking and writing correctly”, although the first mention of grammar as a science can be found in the second half of the XIX century. It is proposed that the establishment of a typology of grammars should be linked with the paradigms of scientific knowledge that currently exist in the history of the science of language.
