COGNITIVE VARIATION OF WORD STOCK IN A BIBLICAL TRANSLATION

Abstract: 

Lexical differences appearing between source texts and biblical translations while contrasting allows to reveal deeper conceptual discrepancies that can be investigated in the Bible studies and translational studies from the point of view of equivalence theory and in cognitive linguistics – from the point of view of cognitive variation. Basing on the source texts and several authoritative Bible translations (the King James Bible, Luther Bible, the Russian Synodal Bible), the author focuses on equivalence of several lexical units in a biblical translation to a lexical unit of the source text and claims that such correspondences are a realization of the invariant represented by the biblical concept.
