Abstract
The article investigates the distinctive features of cognitive linguistics, shows the interaction between functional etymology and cognitive grammar which enables the disclosure of not only the «cognitive background» (E.S. Kubryakova) of precedent grammar units at the level of discourse in synchrony but also their functions in diachrony to explain the categorial entities of these units.
