Abstract
The conceptual field of a problem of daily occurrence is analyzed, the literary foreshortening of its interpretation is approved, ways of its artistic judgment and functionality in I. McEwan's novel – one of the greatest English prose writers of a turn of the XX–XXI centuries are defined.
