LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL COORDINATION IN DIALOGICAL UNITS IN SOCIOPOLITICAL DISCUSSIONS

LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL COORDINATION IN DIALOGICAL UNITS IN SOCIOPOLITICAL DISCUSSIONS

Author:  Ekaterina V. Troshchenkova

Abstract
The article deals with cases of linguistic coordination in written Internet discussions of the Washington Post readers. The focus is on functions of lexical and grammatical alignment in conflict interactions. The analysis shows that in these situations coordination of lexical and syntactic means emphasizes the form of what has been said by the opponent, and the wording and syntax of the reactive utterance often creatively interact to serve this purpose. Coordination in the form of the utterance makes differences in the sense more prominent when the speaker changes evaluative perspective or emotional reaction to something said in the initiating utterance of another commenter.
