SEMANTIC VAGUENESS OF PROPER NAMES, OR WHAT DOES IT MEAN “YOU ARE A REAL EINSTEIN!”

SEMANTIC VAGUENESS OF PROPER NAMES, OR WHAT DOES IT MEAN “YOU ARE A REAL EINSTEIN!”

Author:  Kharitonchik Z.A.

Abstract:  The article uses psycholinguistic experiment focusing on proper names to justify the theory of onyms having meanings, as applied to personal names. The research conducted reveals the syncretism and semantic vagueness of the names under consideration, which is possible due to a number of specific features of their referents which determine a wide choice of actualized properties in utterances, on the one hand, and the difficulties of decoding by addressees, on the other hand.

Keywords:  proper name  ◆  meaning  ◆  metaphor  ◆  syncretism  ◆  semantic vagueness
