Abstract: The paper deals with the history of the medical eponym “Diogenes syndrome”, considered from the positions of cultural linguistics and the science of terminology. The term was critically accepted by medical community due to the controversy between special knowledge about the object of designation (the symptoms of disease) and the stereotype of Greek philosopher as it exists in culture.
