VARIANCE OF PROPOSITIONAL NOMINANTS WITH FUNCTIONALLY CAUSED METONYMY

VARIANCE OF PROPOSITIONAL NOMINANTS WITH FUNCTIONALLY CAUSED METONYMY

Author:  N.D. Krouchinkina

Abstract
In this article, metonymy is considered within the framework of propositional nominants as one of the ways of alternative representation of event prototypes and event-driven concepts. Its utilization in propositional nomination is presented as a syntagmatically- and functionally-caused phenomenon. A whole event in its propo-sitional expression may be actualized in metonymic nomination when, for instance, an event-driven consequent is indicated in the text instead of even-driven antecedent. A syntactic mechanism of such variance is a propositional conversion, which is characterized as changing the valence numbers, per Y.D. Apresjan’s terminology. An important sort of variance is metonymization of syntactic constituent nominants: subjects, complements and adverbial modifiers.
