INTERACTION OF COGNITIVE AND LANGUAGE STRUCTURES IN ONOMASTICS

Author:  T.V. Khvesko

Abstract
Linguistic and cognitive aspects of toponyms are discussed in the article. The language lexical units and their cognitive meaning are described. The mechanisms of semantic derivation and migration of proper names to the class of common names are shown. Diachronic investigations prove the creative character of nomination process. Modern form of any name can never be assumed to convey its original meaning without early spelling to confirm it. So linguistic, historical and etymological factors are to be taken into account.
