LANGUAGE MEANS OF VERBALIZING TONALITY IN FICTIONAL DISCOURSE

Author:  S.E. Tupikova

Abstract
The abstract deals with the study of communicative tonality, one of the major modus categories of discourse. The study proved that contemporary English fictional discourse is characterized by certain types of communicative tonality. These types are the following. Humorous tonality – is not serious communication, which contributes to reducing distance and tension between the interlocutors, witty or funny communication. Рhatic tonality – dynamic, emotional communication, whose only function is to perform a social task, as opposed to conveying information, and to please an interlocutor. And the last type of tonality verbalized frequently in modern English fictional discourse is informative tonality – that is neutral communication used to inform a speaker about something or somebody or to get some information.
It is argued that these types of tonality are verbalized in discourse by using a number of stylistic devices (figures of speech).
