BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE IN A SIMILE

Abstract: 
Simile is studied as a model of cognition supported by background knowledge. Activated (active) background knowledge (cognitive support) is distinguished from passive background knowledge. Three formats of active background knowledge and their hierarchy are brought out.
