NAMING VARIABILITY IN ENGLISH AS LINGUA FRANCA

Author:  N. G. Yuzefovich

Abstract
Using English to speak about 'other' cultures, one has to create new, English, names for foreign culture artefacts. Thus these are secondary names in a new language while primary names are those they have in their native tongue. Professor V. V. Kabakchi introduced the terms 'idionym' and 'xenonym' as names of specific cultural notions in native and foreign culture respectively. Analysing English in the function of foreign culture description helps in understanding the patterns of xenonyms usage. Knowing how to use xenonyms as secondary names is important for effective intercultural communication.
