COGNITIVE & COMMUNICATIVE ASPECTS OF FUNCTIONAL RE-ORIENTATION IN ENGLISH DISCOURSE

Author:  А. E. Levitsky

Abstract
Functional re-orientation is treated as a derivation process that reveals potential qualities of certain notional words. Functional re-orientation of language units leads to their performing new, not typical functions in speech. Such phenomenon is wide-spread in present-day English. Regularities of functional re-orientation in Modern English are closely connected with transformations of syntactic, pragmatic and se-mantic features of meaningful language units. Potential qualities for functional re-orientation have certain cognitive reasons traced in the process of categorization/recategorization of the information received or sent.
