Abstract:
A modern approach to the phenomenon of irony is based on the theory of linguistic metarepresentations founded by D. Sperber and D. Wilson. Such means of linguistic metarepresentation as ironical repetition (echo-metarepresentation) and implicit quotation can be named the main sources of ironical and sarcastic meaning. Both implicit quotation and echo-metarepresentation should be considered in combination with other markers of irony and sarcasm.
Keywords: metarepresentation, irony, sarcasm, echo-metarepresentation, implicit quotation
