Abstract
The paper discusses pragmatic differences in the language use which can become a barrier for successful intercultural communication between English and Russian native speakers when they employ different conversational strategies. It details the cognitive nature of the cross-cultural conflict that arises when Russian speakers of English transfer Russian language pragmatics into English when performing speech acts, such as advising and offering.
