Abstract: The paper aims to reveal motivations for choosing a clause with anticipatory it in the expression of stance in an English literary text. The conducted contrastive analysis of clauses headed by anticipatory it and by personal subjects (It is good that – I am glad that) in particular contexts of narrative and dialogic discourse shows that the choice of a clause with one of the subjects is regulated by the principle of anthropocentrism that is manifested in the relatedness of the clausal subject to the interpretation of the expressed personal stance along two parameters: the type of invoked reality and the associated cognitive operation.
Keywords: stance, clausal subject, discourse, interpretation, anthropocentrism, type of reality, cognitive operation
