THE IDENTICAL AND THE SIMILAR: THE ICONOGRAPHIC FUNCTIONS OF THE SIGN IN DISCOURSE

Abstract:  The article deals with the process of semiosis which is in our case contextually bound and characterizes the transition from monomodal to multimodal communicative field. The article investigates linguistic and extralinguistic experience acquired in the process of cognition and brought into order during the communication process. This approach treats language as a kind of communication lens which focuses on the interpretation of the sign as such. It is an attempt to show the mechanisms of interpretation of experience from sign to its icon as an intermediary to the image of the sign as its own reflection. This chain of metamorphoses demonstrates the direction of ever running similarity which guides the process of semiosis.
