Abstract: People understand the world through their own bodily experience, ascribing a whole set of human qualities to objects and phenomena. Personification of geo-graphical objects, both inhabited and natural ones, is the most common way of con-ceptualizing places. It was found out that personification of a place occurs not only through metaphor, but also through metaphtonymy, especially in case of inhabited objects with which metaphtonymy is the most typical way of conceptualizaion, while metaphor without any metonymic background is less common here. As for natural objects, they are mostly personified through metaphor, though metaphtonymy is also a possible way of their personification.
Keywords: place-name, personification, metaphor, metaphtonymy
