THE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN FACTOR ON THE PRESENTATION OF QUANTITY IN LANGUAGE: NAMES OF FUNCTIONAL MULTITUDES IN PORTUGUESE

Abstract:  The article focuses on the role of the human factor in the conceptualization and categorization of names of functional multitudes denoting paired and complex objects which can be represented either by the plural or singular form. The author analyzes this phenomenon on the material of the Portuguese language. The use or lack of the article (either definite or indefinite) plays a special role in expressing a specific meaning. Singular is used to express a wide range of meanings.
