Abstract: The paper treats the phenomenon of «happiness», the way it was and is still seen by the Japanese and the British. The author tries to analyze the direct and peripheral meanings associated with happiness in Japanese and English proverbs. In the article the author compares the development of the idea of happiness through philosophy, religion, culture and its reflection in folklore. Examples of proverbs in English and Japanese are presented in the article.
