Abstract: The paper shows that narrative discourse should be considered to be an act of communication between the writer and the reader, in which the writer does not only describe events of fictional re-ality, but also directly contacts the reader. The model of this dialogue remains the same from XVIII to XXI centuries of the development of English language narrative discourse. Within this general model the themes of the author’s dialogue with the reader can vary considerably as well as the de-gree of specification in the expression of the author’s opinion and the evaluative component of communication.
Keywords: the structure of communication, English language narrative, dialogism, narrative as a communicative event, diachronic changes in narrative.
