Abstract: The article covers basic intrinsic features of the philosophical ontological category of time and its major linguistic concepts. It focuses upon the cognitive components of the linguistic category of tense such as duration, protracted duration, temporal compression, moments, instances, events, measurement system. Its aim, however, is to reveal the mechanism of the artistic effect of the use of the category of tense in G. Swift’s novel “Waterland” and the leading role of Continuous tenses in postmodernistic time manipulations.
