RECATEGORIZING NEWS IN DISCOURSE: HOW TO MAKE THE EVENTS NEWSWORTHY

Abstract:  The research is based on the general ideas of the theory of interpretation by N. Boldyrev. The author of the paper argues that in discourse the events are construed within different frames of reference and this may lead to a change in the way we interpret and categorize the events. Interpretation of events involves combining typical and individual characteristcs of the events to assign them to the existing categories. It also means selecting a limited number of features to recategorize, create new classes of objects and attribute new values. The categorial shifts may result in the change of status of the events, making them newsworthy.

Keywords:  interpretative function of language, frame of reference, vantage point, fixed and mobile coordinates, event, recategorization.
