REIFICATION IN COGNITION AND COMMUNICATION

Abstract:  The paper draws on the interdisciplinary notion of reification to consider the uni-versal ability to mentally construct abstract entities as concrete objects. In the language this ability is realized in deverbal and deadjectival nouns, or nominalizations. Analyzing Russian and English deadjectival nouns the author shows that they differ in the degree of reification, forming a heterogeneous space. To determine the degree of reification of a noun a number of cognitive-semantic, morphological, syntactic and contextual criteria have been offered. The author also demonstrates that in multimodal discourse reification is realized both by verbal and non-verbal means – images and gestures.

Keywords:  reification, deverbal nouns, deadjectival nouns, reification scale, multimodal discourse
