Abstract:  The paper sets out to show that the phraseological meaning, its deep stratum in particular, is grounded in our perception-based experience. The analysis of meanings of English phraseologisms involves two stages. At the first stage, the phraseologisms under consideration are grouped according to the main types of perception (i.e. exteroception, proprioception and interoception) that are reflected in their images. At the second stage, the conceptual bases of the phraseological images in question are examined from the point of view of how the perception-based experience influences their construction. Special attention is paid to the established fact of multimodality of perception-based experience that finds its way into the phraseological meaning.

Keywords:  theory, phraseological meaning, image, perception, multimodality
