COGNITIVE AND CORPUS-BASED STRATEGIES IN ANALYZING THE WORD’S SEMANTICS AND STRUCTURE (WITH REFERENCE TO ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS)

Abstract:  The article focuses on variability of “verb + adverbial particle” patterns which are often collectively described as “phrasal verbs”. To show a range of verbal com-binations from idiomatic to literal ones, an integral strategy is introduced covering statistical, cognitive, and contrastive methods of analysis. The overall semantic and syntactic unity of the verbal construction is applied as a point of comparison in spec-ifying the difference between true phrasal verbs and “semi-phrasal” ones, which reveal a global meaning, but lack the “fixedness” of the former. With reference to conceptual patterns in realization of verbal meanings, the compositional and phraseological cogni-tive models are differentiated.
