ETHNIC STEREOTYPES AS COGNITIVE MECHANISMS

Abstract:  This article deals with the issue of stereotyping as an integral and natural part of human mental processes. Special attention is given to ethnic stereotypes which are understood as simplified cognitive schemes, usually emotionally colored, generalizing the views of an ethnic group on itself, other ethnic groups and their representatives. In individual verbal and non-verbal behavior, ethnic stereotypes act as cognitive mechanisms influencing all stages of intercultural communication.
