CORRELATION OF CONCEPTS IN BIBLICAL TEXTS (Sources and Translations)

Abstract:  Contrasting a biblical translation and its source allows us to reveal a considerable number of lexico-grammatical and, what is more important, conceptual discrepancies between them. The problem how these discrepancies should be treated in cognitive linguistics remains unsolved. In particular, it is not clear whether one should see in the source texts and translations either different realizations of a single biblical concept or the correlation of similar but not identical concepts, each having a structure and a nominative field of its own. Without coming to any definite conclusion, the author reveals advantages and drawbacks of both approaches, considering the texts of several well-known biblical translations (the King James Bible, the Luther Bible, the Russian Synodal Translation) and their sources.
