DEEP AND SURFACE FEATURES OF CONVERSATION

Abstract:  Drawing upon D. Biber’s multi-dimensional analysis of register variation, conversation is conceptualized as one of four major registers alongside academic prose, newspaper writing, and fiction. It is suggested that being a self-sufficient sublanguage, the register of conversation displays a range of distinct features not only on the level of observable surface lexical, grammatical, lexico-grammatical and textual features, but also on the underlying level of deep structures that should be considered from a cognitive perspective.

Keywords:  register variation, sublanguage, conversation, cognitive perspective, deep and surface structures
