Abstract: The results of a series of psychological experiments on perception of sound symbolism in foreign expressive words by speakers of English and Russian point to a direct correspondence between the phonetic meaning and the semantics of evaluation. Listening to the experimental material, the respondents seem to use different perceptual strategies and demonstrate different sound – meaning associations in accordance with the evaluative connotation the experimental words are supposed to have.
