Abstract

The paper deals with the methodological problem of studying cognitive linguistic discourse structuring in the context of scientific communication and with illustrations from English and Russian teaching materials. The cognitive linguistic discourse category as a basis for modelling academic writing (in the framework of applied linguistics) is oriented to the process of structuring different types of academic texts on the basis of their functional stylistic classification in academic writing. Typological significant characteristics of functioning scientific discourse (in the framework of the discourse category above) are realized in the context of appropriate cognitive linguistic discourse structures. Such structures are represented at the synthetic level of verbal units of the following linguistic categories: 1) the grammatical category; 2) the lexical category oriented to presenting academic vocabulary in use. Studying language of science contributes to success in the field of language education and in the context of scientific and intercultural communication.

Keywords:  scientific communication, academic writing, academic texts, the cognitive linguistic discourse category, cognitive linguistic discourse structures, academic vocabulary in use
