Abstract

The article discusses issues related to cognitive mechanisms of refraction of categories of variance and anomaly. The idea of the variance is closely associated with selective thinking, typical of the stylistics and all sorts of attempts to organize language material in the spirit of the stylistics. The origins of rhetorical thinking are determined by the antique category of anomaly and found in the category of metaplasm. The basis of the category metaplasm is not the idea of choice, but the idea of transformation.

Keywords:  rhetoric, stylistics, deviation, variance, metaplasm
