CONTEXTUAL FUNCTION OF THE TERM IN MEDICAL TEXTS OF THE 17th CENTURY

Abstract:  The paper considers the technique of studying the “behavior” of the medical term from the perspective of the cognitive paradigm during its origin. Such study of the term provides a deeper understanding of its linguistic nature among the special language for medicine. The main reason for the emergence of a new discipline was the establishment of State Medical Institution “Apothecary Order” in the early 17th century. The basic material for the study was manuscripts and published documents “Apothecary Order” having different functional and stylistic direction and containing a set of terminological units – lists, inventory, prescriptions, “tales”. The article deals with terminological units from the point of view of external form, characterized by a multitude of options, at different stages of the transformation taking into account the changes of the semantics in the conditions of context. The texts in the period of interest just begin to be structured, so the terms used in them do not always provide their functional support. But, despite the weak termhood, the terms in different types of texts have specific formal and semantic characteristics and have some functional-pragmatic orientation.
