COGNITIVE VARIATION AND CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE POETICAL LINE LENGTH

Abstract: 

This article examines the connection between the line length and the corporeality and cognitive frames of addressee’s reception of various texts with a typologically similar line length. The long line of the verse libre demonstrates an ambiguous connection to the corporeality. The long line could invite the reader to go through the text uninterrupted, to read (to look at) the line as a whole, this is determined by a sensual rhythm of motion in space, that in itself foreshadows an appearance of a narrative and a series of recitations; visually enhances the linearity of reading, as a result the verse libre with a long line is conceptualized as a prosaism. On the other hand, the long line could increase the difficulty of comprehension and impede the common process of reading, from left to right, that in the end forces the reader to read the verse repeatedly from the start. There isn’t a single formal structure of a poem that works by itself, that does not realize the singular connection with a semantics of the whole text, thus the comprehension of formal structure of a poem assumes cognitive variation.
