SEMANTIC VARIABILITY IN A COGNITIVE PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: 

The paper centres on the main types of semantic variability (ambiguity) characteristic of the language system and of discourse with special reference to constant and variable elements in the language set up. Conceptual structures underlying the semantics of the language units and the semantics of discourse are described as constant elements which serve as cognitive mechanisms which establish the limits of variability and ensure the stability of the language system and the identity of language units.
