Abstract
The article considers the image of the house in the family novel in the Weimar Republic. At that time German families experienced hardships, that led to the changes in their structure and way of life. These processes are reflected in the family novel (Fallada, Kesten, Noth). One of the recurring story elements in them is absence of house as a centre of privacy. The novels show rental housing, where the borders between the world of the family and the outside world are removed, and the members of the families have no private space.

Keywords:  family novel, the Weimar Republic, the image of the house in literature, the culture of everyday life, privacy.
