GIVING ADVICE IN ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LANGUAGE CULTURES

Abstract
The report presents a comparative analysis of the cognitive models of the communicative event «giving advice» characteristic of American and English cultures through the study of discourse strategies and language means, regularly employed by the language users in these cultures to realize the speech event of giving advice. Selected texts of the advice columns culled from the American and English editions of the Cosmopolitan magazine were used as the empirical material. Despite the considerable similarity of the fundamental cognitive models of the speech event, the study reveals certain notable differences in the discourse structures and language means, which are generally exploited to realize the compared models in the analyzed cultures.
