Abstract:
The paper seeks a way of studying conceptual metaphors and their verbal instantiations in contrast and comparison. It outlines a procedure that would account for both cross-linguistic universality and variation in metaphors. The main focus is on several aspects of metaphor that are affected by metaphor variation and can be studied by linguistic methods. The paper specifies the objectives of analysis for each aspect under study.
