LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC COMPONENTS OF POLYPHONY (illustrated with the novel “Amsterdam” by I. McEwan)

Author:  L.S. Nekrasova

Abstract
A polyphonic novel is not only an epic story as a traditionally defined novel but a certain type of fiction narrated on behalf of both a storyteller and different characters. The voices in the narration are equal and present the author’s and characters’ life visions and understanding of their role in the world. The language level of the polyphony is realized on phonetic, grammar, lexical and stylistic levels. Unlike in the direct speech marked with the punctuation the voices are not marked with anything special but outlined with the text means which present the stylistic repertoire on all language levels.

Keywords:  polyphony, structural peculiarities of the polyphonic novel, characters’ voice.
