Abstract:
The article analyses the principles of time conceptualization in the English language. It argues that the semantics of time nominations are based on the conceptual oppositions “light / darkness”, “warmth / cold”, “rest / movement”, “indivisible space / divisible space”. The article demonstrates that these oppositions also make up the basis of conceptual metaphoric representation of time producing conceptual metaphors of water, fire, movement and the divisible object.
