THE SPECIFICS OF USING DEICTIC GESTURES IN SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING

Author:  Leonteva A. V., Agafonova O. V., Petrov A. A.

Abstract
The article is dedicated to the deictic gesture usage in simultaneous interpreting from English into Russian (L1) and Russian into English (L2). The authors analyze different forms of deictic gestures (i. e., pointing and touching) and several types of the referent. The analysis showed that deictic gestures tend to occur while describing entities, quantity, events and time. It was also established that simultaneous interpreters use touching more often while keeping and retrieving information from working memory, which could indicate higher cognitive load.
