Abstract:
This article explores the role of experiment in studying different culturally bound strategies of discourse behaviour used by native and non-native speakers in the same context, and the cognitive structures that underlie their performance. Experimental methods in cross-cultural discourse analysis produce valid data that provide an important insight into the cultural conditioning of discourse behaviours and into the investigation of the cognitive mechanisms of pragmatic transfers in cross-cultural encounters.
